Dana Bauer grew up
in Vallejo, California as part of a music-loving family. A
singer from the get-go, she took up the flute at age ten,
later adding oboe, saxophone and clarinet to her woodwind
arsenal. Dana went on to become an oboe major at San Francisco
State University, all the while studying voice outside of
school and working her way through college fronting a band
formed by her then-boyfriend. The band's repertoire included
swing, country and pop hits of the 80's, but even then Dana's
heart belonged to the Great American Songbook. “I learned
many of the standards I know during that time by listening
religiously to KMPX,(a now-defunct San Francisco radio station
that specialized in Big band Era hits). Those songs spoke
to me in a way that no other music did,” she says.
in 1986, Dana's college
education radically changed course when she was tapped to
be a last-minute replacement for a woodwind player in the
orchestra on the world tour of “A Chorus Line.” “My whole
life changed in that one phone call," she recalls. “Ten
days later, I was on a plane bound for Germany to play for
Broadway legends. I never looked back.” Other tours and long-term
engagements followed, including a six-year stint with "Les
Miserables"."I never did get my Bachelor’s degree,
but feel like I earned a PhD in Show Business,” Dana quips.
Finally off the road in 1996, she began doing voiceover work,
with it's "musician friendly" schedule. Her singing
career had taken a backseat, but was far from over.
The demise of big record labels, the rise of self-produced
projects, and the public's ever-changing musical tastes all
worked in Dana's favor. Now, in 2006, she's proud to announce
the release of her first CD "In My Own Voice", a
collection of well-known and not-so well-known jazz standards.
With America's renewed appreciation for jazz vocals and cabaret,
Dana feels the timing of this CD couldn't be more perfect.
"While I've always loved playing for other people, it
was always a dream of mine to sing what I want, the way I
want and with the musicians I want. This project is literally
a dream come true." |
